Beth pointed you to a small cat carrier and sighed. “He’s in time out right now. He threw a bit of a temper tantrum, and…” She held up a bandaged finger to convey her meaning.

You raised an eyebrow. Was this supposed to be encouraging you to adopt this guy? You knelt in front of the carrier and peered in.

A strange grub like creature glared back at you. His body was a rather bright yellow, but his humanoid head was grey, with messy black hair sticking up. He had two pairs of horns, and if that wasn’t weird enough, he had mismatched red and blue eyes.

The two of you stared at each other for a moment, before you turned to Beth, too shocked to speak. She rubbed the back of her neck awkwardly and forced herself to laugh.

“He sure looks weird, huh? Anyway, he’s a grub, and he needs a home. You’ve got room and no parents to stop you, so think you can take care of him? At least until I find a more permanent solution?” she asked.

You blinked at her, your mind still trying to process what was going on. “Uh, you’re asking me to take care of a thing I’ve never even heard of, who also throws ‘temper tantrums’ that end with injuries? Have you lost you damn mind?!” you demanded.

An offended scree came from the cage, but you ignored the grub. You’d deal with him later if you really had to. Beth smiled sheepishly.

“Hey, most of the time he’s well behaved! He’s just a bit… bipolar. Besides, I’m not allowed to have pets in the apartment and I can’t keep him here since I’m not sure how the weekday workers would react to him. Please take him, just for a while?” she begged.

You turned your attention back to the grub in an attempt to avoid Beth’s infamous puppy dog eyes. The grub seemed to be looking you over, like he was judging you. You shivered a bit under his intense scrutiny and turned back to Beth.

“You sure he won’t kill anyone at my house?” you asked hesitantly.

Beth chuckled. “He’d never do something like that on purpose.” She paused to consider what she just said. “I mean, if he were defending himself from Risa or something, maybe, but I doubt it.” She added hastily.

“Besides, there’s no mind honey to worry about, right?” she muttered under her breath.

You frowned at your friend, trying to decide if you did in fact hear what you thought you did or if you’re just imagining things. Another scree from the pet carrier interrupts your musings and you sigh.

“What now?” you ask the grub.

He merely smirked at you and chirped cheekily. You sighed. Just what have you gotten yourself into?
